Fleet management and vehicle rental provider Alliance Asset
Management have recently communicated to their Customers the
changes to the Low Emission Zone in London that became effective on
January 3rd 2012. The London LEZ has been in force since
2008, and until January 3rd had applied to:
- All diesel-engine lorries over 3.5 tonnes
- All buses and coaches over 5 tonnes with more than 8 seats plus
the driver's seat
- Goods vehicles, motor caravans, motorised horseboxes, and other
specialist vehicles
These vehicles had to meet an emission standard of Euro III for
particulate matter in order to operate within the LEZ without
having to pay a daily charge.
From 3 January 2012 the LEZ has become more stringent:
- The emissions standards will be tightened to Euro IV for
particulate matter for lorries, buses and coaches, motor caravans,
motorised horseboxes and other specialist vehicles affected by the
LEZ since 2008.
- The LEZ will also apply to all diesel vans over 1.205 tonnes
unladen weight and minibuses under 5 tonnes gross vehicle weight
with more than 8 seats plus the driver's seat. All vehicles
in this category will need to meet the Euro 3 emission standard for
PM to drive within the LEZ without paying a daily charge from 3
January 2012.
- Vehicles under 3.5 tonnes are exempt as long as they were
registered as new on or after 1st October 2006
The London LEZ is enforced using cameras which read your
vehicle's registration number plate. This is then checked against a
database of vehicles. A penalty charge notice is issued to
non-compliant vehicles which haven't paid the daily charge.

Most rental vehicles Alliance provides under 3.5 tonnes will be
exempt from the LEZ charges, so if you find that you need to
replace any vehicles in your existing fleet, you may wish to
